Rainy Tuesday Blues

A rainy Tuesday night in November 2006 provided the setting for this blues groove. A friend of mine who is a great bluesy vocalist suggested it might be nice to add a vocal part to the track. I may have to take her advice on that one and re-record it.

I wrote this in 1985, sitting on the beach in San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua, and it became one of my all time favourite progressions to play over. Originally I had a Dylanesque vocal line and lyrics that went over it, but when I came to first record it in my basement with a little 4 track recorder, I did an instrumental version and loved it that way.

Also written in 1985 in San Juan Del Sur, this minor descending progression captures the mystique of the dawn of a new day in the tropics. I used to sit on our porch early in the mornings while we were there, and this was one idea that emerged.

For this one, I was playing around with a riff featuring thirds and fourths, and felt it captured the feeling of driving on a summer day with the top down, enjoying the road.

I started this out with a randomly generated series of drum and bass notes and improvised a chromatic series of notes on top. The run begins with half steps, goes to whole steps, then to minor thirds in the sequence, all starting from the same note.
